Project History

Krasnaya Polyana was officially recognized as a mountain resort in 1898 thanks to its unique environmental and climate characteristics. The surrounding lands were made exclusive hunting grounds for the royal family. A residence was built here for Emperor Nicholas II. Nobles and other members of the Russian pre-revolutionary elite started building their own houses nearby shortly after that. Resort and spa facilities were constructed in the region around the same time. The Krasnaya Polyana highway was built in 1899, giving an impulse to the village's development as a mountain resort. The town has been going through a rebirth of sorts in the past several years. Today it has turned into an alpine climatic resort with a great future. Several world-class ski trails have been built here. The Gornaya Karusel is the largest ski resort in the area, set in the middle of the unique Caucasian National Park. The resort was founded on October 8, 2004. Starting from December 27, 2008, the Gornaya Karusel’s doors have been open to tourists. It is now becoming one of the most popular resorts among Sochi locals and tourists alike.

The decision to conduct the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, made on July 5, 2007 at the International Olympic Committee's 119th session, opened a new page in the history of Krasnaya Polyana. The resort will see the construction of the Olympic mountain sports cluster and plenty of other Olympic facilities. The city's infrastructure is currently undergoing an upheaval thanks to state and private capital investments, making renowned resort even more popular with tourists. Krasnaya Polyana hosts over a million tourists every season. The Gornaya Karusel is frequented by President Medvedev and other top Russian officials, who often conduct meetings with leaders of other nations on the resort's grounds. April 2010 saw the foundation of what will soon become the heart of the resort – Gorky Gorod. Located on the grounds of the Gornaya Karusel, the city will become the center of all sports and cultural life of the Olympics' mountain sports cluster. The city will host the Olympic Media Village in 2014 as well as the Games' auxiliary press center. The construction process is overseen by the government via the State Corporation Olympstroy.
