SochiThe city of Sochi will be the venue for the 2014 Winter Olympics and the central point for the development of the region’s infrastructure. Sochi is one of Russia’s biggest resorts, often called the “Pearl of the Russian Black Sea”. It hosts up to 3 million tourists annually. Sochi is Russia’s only subtropical resort city, stretching for 145 kilometers along the Black Sea shore. Over 90% of Sochi’s territory is taken up by mountains. The entire city is a part of the National Park. Mountain chains, some of them as tall as 3,000 meters above sea level, occupy most of the Black Sea shore in the Sochi region. A unique feature of the region is extreme climatic diversity. The difference in air temperatures between the elevated parts of the region and its valley can be as much as 59 ºF. The average air temperature in the city is 77 ºF–86 ºF in summer and 50 ºF–59 ºF in winter. Sochi’s resort and spa complex is the largest in Russia. The city is home to over 50% of the Krasnodar Krai’s tourist facilities. The International Olympic Committee’s decision to make Sochi the venue for the 2014 Olympics made the city a flagship for the development of sports and outdoor tourism in Russia making the city a global brand for years to come. |
